Teeth can discolour for various reasons including smoking, drinking fizzy drinks and in some cases through antibiotics. Our teeth also tend to discolour as we grow older. Whitening is a process whereby chemicals, usually hydrogen peroxide, are used to remove staining agents from discoloured teeth giving them a lighter shade. The hydrogen peroxide breaks down and releases oxygen ions creating a tooth whitening gel that lifts stains from the teeth. Please note that teeth whitening is not effective on dental restorations such as porcelain veneers and crowns.
What does home whitening involve?
Professional home whitening allows you to carry out teeth whitening procedure in the comfort of your own home, and still benefit from the professional advice of a dentist. Initially we will check your teeth to ensure they are suitable for whitening. Impressions of your teeth are taken, from which two thin customized trays are molded. These precision trays fit your teeth perfectly and comfortably. We will then explain how to apply the whitening gel to the trays and how to correctly place these trays on your teeth. For best results, these trays should be worn for half an hour, twice a day for two weeks.
How long do the results last?
The teeth will always be lighter than they were. However, some people may want to touch-up their teeth by re-whitening for one to two days, usually once or twice a year. This is especially useful if they continue to use staining substances such as coffee or tobacco products.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes! Research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth with hydrogen peroxide under supervision is safe for teeth and gums.
What are the side effects?
Some people experience temporary teeth sensitivity during the treatment. These symptoms always disappear within 1-2 days after interruption or completion of the treatment.
